The Ouxi V8 is one of the best-selling fatbikes in the Netherlands — and you'll see the V8 Pro and V8 Max everywhere too. As standard, these models are limited to 25 km/h. If you want to make your fatbike faster for use on private or enclosed grounds, you can derestrict the V8 by replacing the controller or the display with a tunable version. Below, you'll find out which part you need and why the colour of the motor plug (red or black!) is so important.
Tuning the controller or the display: what's the difference?
When derestricting a fatbike, you replace one of these two parts:
- Controller tuning: the controller is the brain of the drive system and determines how much power goes to the motor. A tunable controller removes the limiter, letting your Ouxi V8 ride at up to around 50 km/h.
- Display tuning: here you replace the display on the handlebars with a tunable version, such as the HC80 or M5 display. You unlock the higher speed via the display. The tunable displays also feature a killswitch — and the HC80 versions a PIN code as well — so not just anyone can ride off on your fatbike.
Replacing the display is usually the quickest option: it sits on the handlebars and connects with a single plug. Replacing a controller takes a bit more wrenching, but it's a proven way to derestrict your fatbike. Not sure? In our tuning kits collection you'll find both solutions conveniently in one place.
Which tuning controller fits your V8? Check the plug colour
This is where things most often go wrong in practice: it's not the model but the colour of the motor plug that determines which controller fits. Ouxi uses two motor variants, each with its own connector on the motor cable at the rear wheel:
- Red plug — belongs to the smaller 250W motor. If you have a red connector, choose the V8/C80 tunable controller with red motor cable.
- Black plug — belongs to the larger 500W motor. If you have a black connector, choose the V8/C80 tunable controller with black motor cable.
This applies just as much to the V8 Pro and V8 Max: always check the plug colour on your motor cable before you order. Can't work it out? Send a photo of the plug to our WhatsApp specialist and we'll take a look with you straight away.
Display tuning: HC80 or M5?
Prefer to replace the display? For the Ouxi V8 series there are tunable displays that unlock speeds of up to 50 km/h:
- HC80 tunable display without NFC — for V8 models without an NFC start function, including PIN code and killswitch.
- HC80 tunable display with NFC — for models you start with an NFC tag or sticker.
- M5 tunable display — for the newer Ouxi 2.0 models with an M5 display, with killswitch.
So first check which display is currently on your fatbike and whether you start it with NFC.
Step-by-step: how to replace the controller (in brief)
- Switch off the fatbike and remove the battery.
- Open the controller compartment in the frame and first take a photo of all the connections.
- Disconnect the plugs from the old controller and connect the new tunable controller one-to-one; the plugs only fit one way.
- Put the battery back in and test the fatbike carefully on private grounds.
Replacing a tunable display is even quicker: old display off the handlebars, new one on, plug in, done. Always keep your original part — that way you can easily set the fatbike back to 25 km/h later.
Please note: a derestricted fatbike is only permitted on private or enclosed grounds; on public roads a 25 km/h limit applies.
Frequently asked questions about derestricting the Ouxi V8
How fast does a derestricted Ouxi V8 go?
With a tunable controller or a tunable HC80/M5 display you'll reach up to around 50 km/h. The exact top speed depends on your motor, battery, tyre pressure and total weight.
How do I know whether I have a red or black plug?
Follow the cable that comes out of the motor at the rear wheel to the connector and check the colour. If in doubt, send a photo via WhatsApp; our specialist will spot the right plug immediately.
Which is easier: tuning the display or the controller?
The display: unclip the old one, fit the new display, connect the plug. Replacing the controller takes a bit more wrenching, but with the step-by-step plan above it's perfectly doable yourself.
Can I take a derestricted fatbike on public roads?
No. A derestricted fatbike is only permitted on private or enclosed grounds; on public roads a maximum of 25 km/h applies.
